New Roots
Why we left Shopify and what this re-launch means to us
We’ve been meaning to refresh things for a while. Not just the look of our site—but the energy of it. We knew a shift was coming, and then Shopify made it easier to decide. After seeing their support for platforms spreading racist rhetoric, we knew we couldn’t stay. This brand was built from love, memory, and care—we couldn’t hold all of that on a platform that didn’t align.
So we left. And once we made that decision, it opened the door to something else.
For the past couple years, we’ve felt a little stuck between where we started and where we’re going. Our early success in 2020 came fast and full, and in some ways we’ve been quietly trying to recreate that feeling ever since. But the truth is—we’re not the same as we were then. None of us are. And this re-launch is less about reinvention, and more about finally letting that be okay.
We’re showing up differently to the brand now. We each carry it in different ways. And while I (Taylor) have a background in business and strategy, this brand has never followed those kinds of rules. Probably because growth has never been the goal.
From the beginning, Commanda Collective was created to honour our family. We had stories, photos, and creative energy that needed somewhere to land. Beading became a way to hold those pieces. To process. To preserve. To share.
But over time, we’ve also had to face the tension: are we creating just to create, or creating to sell? Even when we tell ourselves we’re not thinking about sales, the pressure can creep in quietly. It’s something we’re still learning to navigate.
This platform was always meant to be more than jewellery. It’s a space for storytelling, creativity, memory, and making. We’ve loved experimenting with leatherwork and playing with moccasin design. And we’re excited to keep building the Archive Collection—curious about where it might lead, and how we can continue to channel these family stories in a good way.
Aesthetically, we made some small changes that felt meaningful. We added green and red into our palette—two colours we’ve never used in our branding before. Both are grounding, but green also speaks to the heart. We loved weaving that into this next chapter. We also refined our font (a subtle shift, but one we’re obsessed with), and had fun with new wave and floral shapes to bring in softness and joy.
The relaunch felt like a good time to mark this evolution. Not as a big loud moment, but a quiet recalibration.
We’ve called our newest collection New Roots (Dropping later this week!). It reflects how this all feels. Not an uprooting. Not a reinvention. Just... a deeper planting.
We are excited to share this new chapter with you, take a look around and stay tuned for new beadwork dropping soon! Thanks for being here with us.
